Great ready, Canada! Re-invented for 2013, Captain Canuck returns!
Who is Captain Canuck? Richard Comely and Ron Leishman created this Canadian superhero, which first appeared in the independent comic Captain Canuck # 1 (July 1975). Since the character’s debut, three men have taken up the mantle of Captain Canuck: Tom Evans (a Canadian Secret Agent), Darren Oak (a Town Leader) and David Semple (a RCMP Constable). The original comic book stories were published irregularly over the years, but the character developed a cult following amongst comic book collectors in Canada and America. IDW Publishing would later publish collected volumes of Captain Canuck’s adventures in 2009 and 2011.
In March 2013, an Indiegogo campaign was launched by Captain Canuck Inc. and Smiley Guy Studios to get fan support for their new five part animated web series. The campaign was successful in reaching and then exceeding their $50,000 goal. The web series will feature a cast that includes a group of television genre actors and personalities: Kris Holden-Reid (from Lost Girl) as Captain Canuck, Paul Amos (from Lost Girl) as Mr. Gold, Laura Vandervoort (from Smallville) as Blue Fox, Ajay Fry as himself (from InnerSPACE of the Space Channel) and Tatiana Maslany (from Orphan Black) as an unveiled character (as of this writing). Even Canadian rock band, Platinum Blonde, will be featured in the first episode!
I’m excited to see how the character will be interpreted as a Canadian superhero in a 21st century setting. The new uniform design looks great! The voice talent assembled is great too and their involvement should definitely bring more attention to the series.
Captain Canuck: The Animated Web Series will premiere online on www.captaincanuck.com on July 1st, 2013! Happy Canada Day!
